My laptop is slow. Clean it up or buy a new one?
Three questions decide: how old is it, does it have an SSD, and how much memory does it have. A laptop up to about six years old with an SSD and 8 gigabytes becomes usable again with a clean-up, which takes an hour. One with an old hard drive is usually only worth it with a new SSD, around 100 EUR plus fitting. Older than eight years, under 8 gigabytes or no updates for Windows 11: buy new, because every euro put into the old device is lost.

A call from the alleged Microsoft support, what to do?
Hang up. Microsoft, Apple, your telecom provider and your bank do not call anyone to report a virus or demand remote access. Anyone who calls and asks you to install a program, enter a number or buy gift cards is a scammer. If you have already installed something or granted access: disconnect the internet, change passwords from another device, call the bank, report it to the police.

How do I move my data to a new laptop?
The easiest way is a cloud account (Microsoft, Apple or Google) signed in on both devices, or an external hard drive. On Windows, programs cannot be copied, they are reinstalled on the new device. Have your passwords and licence keys ready beforehand. Expect about two hours if everything goes smoothly.

Why is my Wi-Fi so bad in the bedroom?
Usually the router is in the wrong place: too far away, behind too many walls or inside a cabinet. Every reinforced concrete ceiling, every wall with underfloor heating and every radiator in between eats signal. A second access point in the right spot, as mesh or connected by cable, fixes this in most homes. A stronger router almost never does.

Which TV is suitable for seniors?
Honestly: none of them, out of the box. Every TV you buy today is a smart TV. It starts in a menu full of apps, wants an account and updates, and switching on no longer means watching TV. All of that can be set up so it is as simple as it used to be, but that setup is exactly where help pays off. For the set itself, what counts is size by viewing distance, good sound and a clear remote, and Panasonic has one of the best.

How do I get WhatsApp with all my chats onto a new phone?
On the same system, Android to Android or iPhone to iPhone, the chats come along via the backup in Google Drive or iCloud, or directly from device to device via QR code. When switching between Android and iPhone, WhatsApp also transfers the chats directly, for which both phones must be switched on and lying side by side. In every case the old phone number must still be reachable, because a confirmation code arrives by SMS.

My printer is offline, what can I do?
Nine times out of ten the printer has lost its Wi-Fi connection or received a new address from the router, under which the computer no longer finds it. First aid: unplug printer and router for 30 seconds, switch them back on, check on the printer whether it is in the Wi-Fi. If that does not help, remove the printer on the computer once and add it again. A fixed address for the printer in the router fixes it for good.

How do I set up parental controls on a phone?
With the manufacturers' built-in tools: Screen Time and Family Sharing on iPhone, Google Family Link on Android. Both are free, limit times and apps, filter content, require your approval for purchases and show you what the child uses. The prerequisite is a separate child account, not your own. More important than the technology is the agreement with the child, or the lock becomes a daily fight.
